Y.C. Chiang Cape Cod Tai Chi SeminarOn March 22-23, 1997, Master Y. C. Chiang led a weekend seminar on Guang Ping Yang Tai Chi Chuan. More than 80 people from six states attended this inspiring event. The seminar was held at the Bourne Bridge Hotel along side the Cape Cod Canal. The weather was clear, crisp, and cool, with the Hale-Bopp comet in view at night. Master Chiang is Director of the Wen Wu School of Martial Arts and the Chinese Clinic of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine in El Cerrito, CA. Master Chiang has been doing martial arts for more than 60 years and studied with Master Kuo Lien-Ying for 27 years and six years with Master Wang Zi Chen, his grand teacher. Very few attending the seminar had seen a master of his high rank and caliber. Master Chiang lectured on the history of Guang Ping Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan and the tai chi philosophy that our form is based on and its importance. He demonstrated the 64 movements and gave detailed instruction clearly illustrating the right and wrong way to do them. He showed the applications of some movements and how they were dangerous and against the law in tournaments, but reminded us that knowing the application is easy, but the practice and development needed to do the movements correctly is hard. He covered everything from chin to toe! After a festive Saturday night banquet, which included door prizes, Master Chiang gave another lecture on care of the eyes and exercises for improving the eyesight. The next morning Master Chiang spoke more about the form's movements. We also heard about the proper way to do the Universal Post, our standing meditation and learned about the second level of standing meditation. Master Chiang was accompanied by his wife, Liu Hwai-Ru, who demonstrated the making of green tea and its usefulness. She also did Wild Goose Qi Gong, unfamiliar to almost everyone present and talked about its history and function. She concluded her qi gong lecture with how to do sitting meditation.
The seminar ended on Sunday afternoon with a demonstration by Master Chiang doing White Crane Kung Fu. Everyone left the seminar inspired and felt part of the great Guang Ping Yang Tai Chi family. The seminar was sponsored by the Cape Cod Guang Ping Tai Ji Quan Club that was founded in September of 1995. Most of its members were students of Diane Hoxmeier who brought Guang Ping Yang Style Tai Chi to New England in the early 1980's. Six "Guang Pingers" came from Ohio, students of the late and beloved Mary Pabst. Mary was a student of Diane's in New Hampshire. In addition to Massachusetts, several people also attended from New Hampshire as well as New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The seminar with Master Y. C. Chiang was a big success and was rated outstanding by everyone. We couldn't thank him enough. And the best part? He wants to come back!
